mudd. concrete sinks are designed and manufactured in Ontario, transforming a humble material into a quietly architectural object. Because concrete is unfamiliar to most clients as a sink material, the questions we get tend to repeat. This page answers the ones we hear most often.

What is a concrete sink?

A basin made from cast concrete, sealed and waxed so the surface repels water rather than absorbing it. Done well, the result is a basin with the visual weight and tactility of stone, without the pricing or supply constraints. Done poorly — typically in unreinforced DIY casts — concrete sinks crack under regular use.

What makes mudd. concrete different from other concrete sinks?

Two things. First, every basin is fibre-reinforced for structural integrity, which prevents the cracking that plagues unreinforced casts. Second, every basin is finished with a six-layer water-based sealer that bonds to the concrete and produces a smooth, durable surface — much closer in feel to polished stone than to raw concrete. Sinks are handcrafted by trained artisans using locally sourced materials.

With normal use and care, a mudd. sink lasts ten years or more.

Can I use my mudd. sink right away?

Light use, yes. Heavy use, wait two to three weeks. Every basin ships with the seal date listed on the included documentation. The sealer cures and fully bonds to the concrete during that window — running a tap is fine, but avoid hot or acidic exposure until it's complete. After three weeks past the seal date, use as normal.

What finishes do mudd. sinks come in?

Fifteen colours across three families. Neutrals: Ash, Mocha, Smoke, Cotton, Midnight. Warm tones: Berry, Mousse, Peach, Rose. Blues and greens: Mist, Denim, Navy, Forest. Each colour goes through the same sealing process, so all finishes have the same smooth, slightly polished surface.

How do I make sure the colour will look right in my space?

Order samples and view them in the actual room, under the actual lighting. Screen colours and printed swatches are unreliable for concrete — the same finish reads differently against warm wood than against cool tile, and differently again under daylight versus warm artificial light. Samples are available individually or as a complete set.

One note: the samples are unsealed and feel rough to the touch. That's intentional — they're for colour matching, not surface preview. Finished sinks are sealed and smooth.

The patina that forms on a mudd. sink is a feature, not a flaw. Like aged leather or unlacquered brass, sealed concrete is a living finish — it deepens with use.

Will my sink change over time?

Yes, and intentionally. Sealed concrete is a living finish — it deepens, saturates, and develops a patina with regular use. The change is gradual and uneven, similar to aged leather or unlacquered brass. Most owners come to prefer the sink's appearance after a few months of use to its appearance on day one.

I have a small space. Can I still use a mudd. sink?

Yes. The collection includes seven sizes, ranging from compact wall-affixed basins to larger countertop models. For powder rooms or small bathrooms, the smaller models in the Affix line work well — the square Yarra and circular Odet are common choices. Every basin is symmetrical, so it can be flipped or rotated to suit the space.

How do I care for a mudd. concrete sink?

Mild soap and warm water for daily cleaning. Avoid acidic, basic, or abrasive cleaners — they damage the sealer and may stain the concrete. Wipe up oily or acidic spills (vinegar, citrus, wine) quickly; left to sit, they can darken the finish. Sharp objects can scratch the surface, as they would on porcelain or ceramic.

Can a concrete sink crack from temperature shock?

It can — like all solid-surface basins, including stone, glass, and ceramic. The most common cause is pouring scalding water into a cold basin, and the most common location for a crack is directly under the bath filler or faucet spout. Avoid prolonged extreme temperatures and never shock the sink with very hot or very cold water.

Do mudd. sinks come with faucets and drains?

No — the basins are sold on their own, which gives clients freedom to specify hardware that suits the project. We typically pair them with d line's QTOO collection.

For drains, the basin opening is 44mm (1¾") and accepts standard 1¼" to 1½" thread sizes. Drains without overflow up to 3" outer diameter fit. Pop-up drains without overflow are compatible. Where overflow is required, a grid drain works. Countertop basins accept either deck-mounted or wall-mounted faucets; wall-hung Affix basins require wall-mounted faucets.

Will the artisan mark show on the installed sink?

Only if you want it to. Every basin is embossed with a small mark on one exterior face, confirming it as the work of a trained artisan. Because the basins are symmetrical, the mark can be displayed or rotated out of view depending on the install.
