Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between top-mount and face-mount barn door hardware?
It comes down to how the hangers attach to the door. Face-mount hangers fix to the front face of the door, with the strap sitting visibly against it — the classic exposed-strap barn-door look. Top-mount hangers fix to the top edge of the door, so the strap is concealed and only the wheel shows on the track, for a cleaner, more minimal line. Both carry the door the same way, so the choice is largely aesthetic, though a top mount needs enough solid material on the door's top edge to take the fixing. Casson Hardware lists each mount type as its own product.
How do I measure for a barn door, and what track length do I need?
Two rules cover most installations. Size the door 2–3" wider than the opening on each side so it overlaps and fully covers the gap, and about 1" taller at the top — a 32" opening takes roughly a 36–38" wide door. For track, allow about twice the door width so the door slides completely clear of the opening; a 36" door needs about a 6' (72") track. Casson Hardware tracks are 6' (72"), suiting a single door up to about 36" wide over an opening up to roughly 32". You'll also need clear wall beside the opening, at least as wide as the door, for it to slide onto. For wider openings, see the double-door options below or send your measurements to the specification team.
What are my options for a wide or double-door opening?
For openings too wide for a single door, there are two approaches. A bi-part system runs two doors on one track that meet in the middle and slide apart to either side — best for a wide, symmetrical opening you want to open from the centre. A bypass system runs two or more doors on parallel tracks that slide past one another, stacking to one or both sides — useful when there isn't enough wall beside the opening for a door to slide fully clear; a telescopic bypass moves several panels per side for the widest openings. Sizing for doubles depends on the exact opening, so send the dimensions and Casson Hardware will confirm the configuration and track.
Should I choose pre-drilled or drilled on site?
Pre-drilled straps arrive with the mounting holes already set to a standard door, ready to install — the simplest choice for a standard door. Not-pre-drilled straps leave hole placement to the installer, which suits non-standard doors or when you want precise control over positioning. If you're unsure, pre-drilled covers most standard doors.
What else do I need besides the track and hangers?
A complete barn door installation usually also calls for a floor guide at the base of the door, which keeps it from swinging away from the wall, and solid fixing into the wall — the track mounts into studs, or into a backer board spanning them, sized to carry the door's weight. Check each product page for what's included and the weight the system supports, and tell the specification team your door's weight and construction to confirm the hardware suits.
Will a barn door give me privacy and block sound?
A sliding barn door hangs just off the wall and doesn't seal against a frame the way a hinged door does, so a small gap remains around it and some light and sound will pass. It suits most rooms; where full privacy or sound isolation matters, such as a bathroom, plan for that or ask about pocket and frameless door systems as an alternative.
What materials is Casson Hardware barn door hardware available in?
Casson Hardware barn door hardware is offered in solid brass, solid stainless steel, and blackened steel. Solid brass and solid stainless are the material throughout, not a plated coating, so they wear and patina as solid metal; blackened steel is a treated steel finish. Material availability is confirmed on each product page.
Does Casson Hardware offer trade pricing on barn door hardware, and where can I buy it?
