Description

FSB 1291 is part of FSB's Standard Mortise Lock (SML) program — German-engineered architectural door hardware known for precise proportions and a tactile, ergonomic grip.

Foster + Partners Industrial Design drew FSB 1291 along a single freehand curve, with a short grip and soft geometry the designers describe as a play of light. It opens FSB's largest product family, which took the iF Design Award Gold in 2026.

Available in passage, privacy, single dummy, and double dummy configurations. Handing is required for single dummy.

One language, every opening.

Franz Schneider Brakel has been making architectural hardware in Brakel, Germany since 1881. The premise is continuity: each FSB model is developed as a family rather than a single object, so a lever, a window handle, and a fitting can carry one design through every opening in a building.

The catalogue reads as a record of twentieth-century design. Johannes Potente shaped the house style from the 1950s, and four of his models sit in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Later work came from David Chipperfield, John Pawson, Jasper Morrison, Hartmut Weise, and Foster + Partners Industrial Design, each brief resolved as a complete system.

Hardware is produced in aluminum, stainless steel, and bronze, with finishes selected for how they hold up to daily contact. Aluminum Pure is left to develop a patina with use rather than sealed to a fixed state. The 1016 and 1076 stainless steel series are Cradle to Cradle Certified.

Principles

01

Continuity as System
Every model is developed as a full family spanning door levers, window handles, pulls, and fittings. One design carries across every opening in a project without substitution.

02

Designers on Record
Each lever is attributable to a named designer, from Johannes Potente through David Chipperfield, John Pawson, Jasper Morrison, and Foster + Partners Industrial Design. Four Potente models are held in MoMA's permanent collection.

03

Materials That Wear
Aluminum, stainless steel, and bronze, chosen for how they age under daily contact. Aluminum Pure is left unsealed so the surface develops with use rather than holding a fixed state.

04

Made in Brakel
Designed and manufactured in Brakel, Germany since 1881. The 1016 and 1076 stainless steel series are Cradle to Cradle Certified.
