Description
The most considered electrical outlet in architecture is one you cannot see. The Bocci 22 System is a flush-mounted electrical system designed by Omer Arbel that disappears entirely into the surfaces it serves, drywall, stone, tile, glass, millwork, and concrete, leaving no cover plate, no frame, and no interruption to the finish. It is the defining detail that separates a resolved interior from a standard one.
Where conventional outlets punctuate a wall with plastic hardware, the 22 System integrates. A cylindrical device locks into a mounting plate seated directly behind the finish material, its face flush with the surface. The result is an outlet that becomes part of the architecture, as precise and considered as the marble it sits in, the millwork it meets, or the plaster it disappears into.
Designed in 2009 and made in Vancouver, Canada by Bocci. UL-listed for installation in Canada and the United States. Honoured by Red Dot, D&AD, the German Design Council, and the Industrial Designer Society of America.
How It Installs
The 22 System installs in two ways depending on your wall surface. Both result in the same outcome: a device face flush with the finished wall, with no visible hardware of any kind.
Drywall — The mounting plate is embedded directly into the wall during the finishing process, mudded over and painted flush. The outlet emerges at the surface as though it was always meant to be there. No cover plate. No escutcheon. No trace of conventional hardware. Compatible with drywall, plaster, and wallpaper applications.
Multi-Material — For stone, tile, glass, millwork, MDF, Corian, and other solid substrates. The mounting plate is set behind the finish material before it is installed. The device locks through from the face, sitting precisely flush with the surface. Backsplashes, stonework, and millwork remain completely uninterrupted. Barrel depth must be matched to material thickness — see the Barrel Depth Selection Guide.
Device Configurations
The 22 System is available in single and double configurations. Double plates are rotatable — they can be oriented vertically or horizontally to suit the installation.
Single — One device, one mounting plate.
Double Linear — Two devices in a tight vertical or horizontal stack.
Double Linear Wide — Two devices in a vertical or horizontal stack with wider spacing between positions.
Double Diagonal — Two devices set at an offset angle to one another. The mounting plate is rotatable to suit the desired orientation.
Available Devices
All devices are cylindrical, Ø 35 mm, and interchangeable within any 22 System mounting plate. Standard finishes (White, Black, Almond, Grey) are available across all device types. Heritage finishes are available for outlets and USB-C only — see Finishes below.
Outlets
- 15A Outlet — Type A/B, 120V, tamper resistant. The standard choice for most residential and commercial applications. Confirm amperage with your electrician if unsure.
- 20A Outlet — Type A/B, 120V, tamper resistant. Requires a dedicated 20A branch circuit. Specified for high-draw appliances or commercial applications.

Selecting the Right Barrel Depth
For multi-material installations, the barrel depth of the device must match the thickness of the finish material. This is the most common point of confusion — and the most important measurement to get right before ordering.
Measure from the finished face of the material to its back edge. Then select the depth that matches, or machine/shim the material to reach one of the three standard depths:
- Short — 6.35 mm (¼"). Standard depth. Available for all device types.
- Medium — 19 mm (¾"). Available for selected components — confirm before ordering.
- Long — 31.75 mm (1¼"). Available for selected components — confirm before ordering.
If your material falls between two depths, select the next size up and machine or shim accordingly. Soft materials (hardwood, MDF) are typically machined down. Hard materials (stone, tile) are typically shimmed up. Refer to the Barrel Depth Selection Guide (PDF) for detailed guidance, or contact our team — this is a common question and we're happy to help.
