Description

The most considered electrical outlet in architecture is one you cannot see. The Bocci 22 System is a flush-mounted electrical system designed by Omer Arbel that disappears entirely into the surfaces it serves — drywall, stone, tile, glass, millwork, and concrete — leaving no cover plate, no frame, and no interruption to the finish. It is the defining detail that separates a resolved interior from a standard one.

Where conventional outlets punctuate a wall with plastic hardware, the 22 System integrates. A cylindrical device locks into a mounting plate seated directly behind the finish material, its face flush with the surface. The result is an outlet that becomes part of the architecture — as precise and considered as the marble it sits in, the millwork it meets, or the plaster it disappears into.

Designed in 2009 and made in Vancouver, Canada by Bocci. UL-listed for installation in Canada and the United States. Honoured by Red Dot, D&AD, the German Design Council, and the Industrial Designer Society of America.

Before You Order

The 22 System is a configured product. Confirm the following before ordering — these are the questions our team fields most often.

A mounting plate is required. Every device installs into a 22 System mounting plate. Devices cannot be installed into a standard junction box alone. Single device = single plate. Two devices = double plate.

Drywall uses a single barrel size (Short). The three-depth logic (Short / Medium / Long) applies only to multi-material installations. If you are installing into drywall, barrel length is not a choice.

Depth cannot be adjusted after installation. Once the finish material is installed, the barrel depth is fixed — unless the wall is accessible from behind. Confirm material thickness carefully, especially for stone, tile, and millwork.

The Keypad Control is not a standard on/off switch. It is a momentary smart-home control requiring a low-voltage data connection and a compatible home automation system. It does not replace a line-voltage switch.

GFCI is not available within the 22 System. For code compliance in wet locations, install an upstream GFCI breaker at the panel. Consult a certified electrician.

How It Installs

The 22 System installs in two ways depending on your wall surface. Both result in the same outcome: a device face flush with the finished wall, with no visible hardware of any kind.

Drywall — The mounting plate is embedded directly into the wall during the finishing process, mudded over and painted flush. The outlet emerges at the surface as though it was always meant to be there. No cover plate. No escutcheon. No trace of conventional hardware. Compatible with drywall, plaster, and wallpaper applications. Drywall installations use a single barrel length (Short, 6.35 mm / ¼").

Multi-Material — For stone, tile, glass, millwork, MDF, Corian, and other solid substrates. The mounting plate is set behind the finish material before it is installed. The device locks through from the face, sitting precisely flush with the surface. Backsplashes, stonework, and millwork remain completely uninterrupted. Barrel depth must be matched to material thickness — see Selecting the Right Barrel Depth.

Device Configurations

The 22 System is available in single and double configurations. Double plates are rotatable — they can be oriented vertically or horizontally to suit the installation.

Single — One device, one mounting plate.

Double Linear — Two devices in a tight vertical or horizontal stack.

Double Linear Wide — Two devices in a vertical or horizontal stack with wider spacing between positions.

Double Diagonal — Two devices set at an offset angle to one another. The mounting plate is rotatable to suit the desired orientation.

Stacking two single devices: Two single mounting plates can be installed adjacent to one another — vertically or horizontally — to create a two-device layout across separate junction boxes. For a single-plate integrated look, specify a Double Linear or Double Linear Wide instead.

Available Devices

All devices are cylindrical, Ø 35 mm, and interchangeable within any 22 System mounting plate. Standard finishes (White, Black, Almond, Grey) are available across all device types. Heritage finishes are available for outlets and USB-C only — see Finishes below.

Outlets

  • 15A Outlet — Type A/B, 120V, tamper resistant. The standard choice for most residential and commercial applications. Confirm amperage with your electrician if unsure.
  • 20A Outlet — Type A/B, 120V, tamper resistant. Requires a dedicated 20A branch circuit. Specified for high-draw appliances or commercial applications.

Type G (UK / international) and other regional socket standards are not stocked by Casson. Contact Bocci directly for international device availability.

USB & Media

  • USB-A — 15W, dual port. For charging and device connectivity.
  • USB-C — 45W, 100–240V, single port. Fast-charge compatible. Available in Heritage finishes.
  • HDMI — Standard pass-through connector. For AV integration into millwork, conference rooms, or media walls.

Data & Control — Available on request. Lead times may vary. Contact us to confirm availability and pricing.

  • CAT6A Data — RJ45. High-speed data connection for network integration.
  • Coaxial / Cable — F Connector. For cable and satellite connections.
  • Telephone — RJ12.
  • Keypad Control — A minimalist smart home keypad. Functions as a momentary control — not a standard line-voltage on/off switch. Programmable via a low-voltage CAT5 data connection, and compatible with leading home automation systems. Dimming functions can be programmed through a compatible smart home system; the 22 System does not include a standalone dimmer device.
Selecting the Right Barrel Depth

For multi-material installations, the barrel depth of the device must match the thickness of the finish material. This is the most common point of confusion — and the most important measurement to get right before ordering.

Measure from the finished face of the material to its back edge. For multi-layer walls (e.g. ½" plywood substrate behind ¾" stone), add the layer thicknesses together and select by total depth.

Material Thickness Select If Between Sizes
Up to 6.35 mm (¼") Short
6.35–19 mm (¼"–¾") Medium Select Medium; shim hard materials up, or machine soft materials down
19–31.75 mm (¾"–1¼") Long Select Long; shim hard materials up, or machine soft materials down
Over 31.75 mm (1¼") Not supported Contact us

Availability by depth: Short is available for all device types. Medium and Long are available for selected components — confirm before ordering.

Depth is fixed once installed. Barrel depth cannot be changed after the finish material is in place unless the wall is accessible from behind. For stone and tile, confirm material thickness before ordering.

Refer to the Barrel Depth Selection Guide (PDF) for detailed guidance, or contact our team — this is a common question and we're happy to help.

FAQ
Do I need a mounting plate, or can I order just the device?
A mounting plate is required. Devices install into a 22 System mounting plate — not into a standard junction box directly. Single device = single plate; two devices = double plate.
Does drywall use the same Short / Medium / Long barrel logic?
No. Drywall installations use a single barrel length (Short, 6.35 mm / ¼"). The three-depth system applies only to multi-material installations.
Which barrel depth for my material?
Measure from the face of the finish material to the back of the substrate. Short = 6.35 mm (¼"), Medium = 19 mm (¾"), Long = 31.75 mm (1¼"). If you fall between sizes, select the next size up and shim or machine to match. For multi-layer walls (e.g. ½" plywood + ¾" stone), add layer thicknesses together. Barrel Depth Selection Guide (PDF)
Can I adjust barrel depth after the wall is finished?
No — barrel depth is fixed once the finish material is installed, unless the wall is accessible from behind. Confirm material thickness before ordering, particularly for stone and tile where post-install correction is not feasible.
Can two single outlets be stacked vertically?
Yes. Two single mounting plates can be installed adjacent to one another — vertically or horizontally — across separate junction boxes. For a single-plate integrated result, specify a Double Linear or Double Linear Wide configuration instead.
Is the Keypad Control a standard on/off switch?
No. The Keypad Control is a momentary low-voltage control, not a line-voltage switch. It requires a data connection (CAT5) and a compatible home automation system to function. Order this device only if you are integrating with a smart home platform.
Is there a GFCI outlet?
Not within the 22 System itself. For wet-area code compliance, install an upstream GFCI breaker in the panel (sourced independently). Consult a certified electrician.
Can the Decorative Trim Ring be added after installation?
No. The trim ring is a multi-material accessory only and must be specified at time of order so it can be accounted for during finish material preparation. It cannot be retrofitted to a completed installation.
Are Type G (UK / international) outlets available?
Not through Casson. For international device variants, contact Bocci directly.
What is the lead time? Is rush shipping available?
Standard lead time is 1–2 weeks from order confirmation. Rush production is available for $50 CAD — request in order notes or at checkout. Data & Control devices may require additional lead time; confirm at time of quote.

Outlets as architecture.

The Bocci 22 System treats electrical outlets as architectural elements rather than hardware. Devices sit flush with the surface they serve — drywall, stone, tile, glass, millwork, concrete — with no cover plate, no frame, and no interruption to the finish. A cylindrical device locks into a mounting plate set behind the finish material. The face sits precisely flush with the surface; from any distance the outlet reads as part of the wall, not applied to it. The system is certified for use across North America and compatible with every common substrate. Designed by Omer Arbel in 2009 and made in Vancouver by Bocci. The system has been honoured by Red Dot, D&AD, the German Design Council, and the Industrial Designer Society of America. More than fifteen years of installations refine a single proposition: electrical fittings should recede into the surfaces they serve.

Principles

01

Flush by Design
Devices sit precisely flush with the finish material. No cover plate, no frame, no escutcheon. The outlet disappears into the wall and the architecture remains uninterrupted.

02

Every Substrate
Engineered for drywall, plaster, stone, tile, glass, concrete, millwork, MDF, and Corian. Mounting plates are substrate-specific; devices are universal. Every common wall assembly is supported.

03

One Modular System
Every plate accepts every device. Singles, doubles, linear, diagonal — all built from a shared set of components. Configuration is a specification decision, not an engineering one.

04

Code Compliant
UL-listed to standards 498 and 514D. NEC 2023 compliant. CE compliant. Approved for use in New York City as of June 2024. Tamper-resistant standard across all outlet configurations.
